Parents can accompany their children into our treatment areas for any appointment.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should visit the kids dentist by their first birthday and we endorse this. Your child’s first visit to the clinic and interaction with the dentist is very important and should be as positive and enjoyable as possible. We want your child to feel comfortable at all times and to enjoy getting to know our doctors and staff. A pleasant first visit to the dentist builds trust and helps put your child at ease for future visits.
How To Prepare For The First Visit
In advance of the first visit, try to put your child at ease and avoid using words that may cause your child to worry, such as ´needle´ or ´drill´. We encourage parents to accompany their children into our treatment areas and stay with their child during the first visit at least.
Depending on the age of the child, sometimes during the first visit we just let them sit in the dental chair and play at being a little dentist so that they feel comfortable with the environment. Don´t worry, we dont charge you for this. The next time they visit, we can carry out the examination.
Once we have carried out the examination, we will explain any treatments that are necessary and the importance of good oral health to both you and your child in a positive way and answer any questions you and your child may have. We encourage children to discuss any fears or anxieties they may have so we can address those and make them feel at ease.
Regular check-ups
We recommend that both adults and children should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a check-up. Check-ups form part of a good oral health routine and can help prevent problems from occurring
What To Expect At The Regular Check-Up

Frequently asked questions about childrens dental health to our children dentist
Caring for your child’s primary or baby teeth is very important because healthy primary teeth will allow your child to eat properly, develop good pronunciation, talk clearly and have a positive self-image and feel confident
Your child´s first tooth should normally appear between the age of 6 to 12 months. See the illustration below for more details. When the first teeth erupt, they will cause gums to be sore and tender. This can cause a child to be a little irritable and this can last until the age of 3. You can help ease the discomfort by rubbing the gums gently with a clean finger, the back of a cold spoon or a cold, wet cloth. You can also use a teething ring but try to avoid teething biscuits as they contain sugar which is not good for teeth.
Tooth decay in babies and tots can be prevented or minimised by not allowing sleeping babies or tots to breast or bottle-feed. If they need a bottle to help them sleep, then you can give them a bottle filled with water or a pacifier.
A pediatric dentist is a dentist who has completed normally two extra years of specialized training on the oral health of children from infants through to teenagers. Different approaches are required when dealing with infants, toddlers, pre-teens and teenagers and the pediatric dentist is best qualified to meet these needs.
You should inform your child of the visit and the reasons a check-up at the dentist is necessary. Try to put them at ease and avoid words that may worry or frighten them such as ´needle´ ´drill´ or ´hurt´. Explain that the dentist wants to examine their teeth to check that everything is ok and that the visit will be enjoyable.
We recommend examinations (check-ups) every six months for children, including an X-ray once a year. We use digital radiography, lead body aprons and shields to protect patients and the amount of radiation received is negligible.
Proper brushing removes plaque that if not removed can irritate the gums, cause cavities and bad breath. Start brushing as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts. Use a soft bristle brush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste to brush twice a day. When your child is aged approximately 4 years they should be able to brush their own teeth maybe with some supervision from you to ensure they do it correctly. Teach your child to place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to the gum line and brush in a gentle circular motion. Brush the outer and inner surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower and finish by brushing the tongue to help freshen breath and remove any bacteria.
Flossing helps remove plaque between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing can start as soon as two teeth touch. Use approx 30cm of floss (for children), and wind most of it around both of your middle fingers. Hold the floss between your thumbs and forefingers. Use a gentle back and forth motion to guide the floss between your child´s teeth. Curve the floss into a C-shape and slide it between the gum and tooth until you feel some resistance and then gently scrape the floss against the side of the tooth. Repeat this on each tooth. You should floss your child’s teeth until they can do it on their own.
A dental sealant is a fluoride based material that is applied in quick setting liquid form to the surfaces of the back teeth where most cavities occur in children. It acts like a barrier against the effects of food, plaque and acids. It is a harmless material to humans and has no side effects.
They should use a fluoride based toothpaste as this will help protect against cavities. Do not allow your child to use teeth whitening toothpastes or creams as many contain abrasives that can be damaging to teeth.
If there is a history of misalignment or bad bites in your family, your child may also develop these and it will become evident when your child is at around 2 – 3 years old. Preventative treatments can start from the ages of 2 – 6 years. As a rule the earlier orthodontic treatments start the easier it is to correct problems and the time taken to do so is shorter.
Yes, your child should use a mouthguard whilst participating in any activiies or sports where a blow to the mouth or face can occur. We can make custom mouthguards that will fit your child properly and stay in place, making it easier for them to talk and breath.
Testimonials
We were very happy to find Lilian for a couple of reasons. First, she spoke English, which was very helpful for us. Second, she was wonderful with our 3 year old and 2 year old! She didn’t force them to sit in the chair or do anything to make them afraid, but rather did things slowly and with a lot of encouragement. My 3 year old was able to have a cleaning and a cavity filled without so much as a whimper because she was so comfortable with Lilian (and my daughter is pretty nervous and shy when it comes to new people and things). We were thankful for such a great experience!
