Dental Crowns

No, they don’t have to be. Although we use pure Zirconia porcelain, a top grade material, for our crowns, we keep our costs down by making all our crowns in our own laboratory using CAD/CAM dental technology.

They are so strong, we can guarantee them for life. Crowns of pure Zirconia porcelain are a very cost effective investment in your oral health and appearance.

Crowns are used in dentistry for necessity and for aesthetic reasons.

They can restore lost function of the teeth and can replicate the appearance of the original tooth or improve on its appearance.

If you choose crowns made of the right material, such as our crowns made of Zirconia porcelain, they can last you a lifetime.

When used to replace a missing tooth, they are bonded to an implant and its abutment.

When not used with an implant, they are fitted in a similar way to Dental Veneers, using a light-sensitive adhesive that is placed between the crown and the tooth. The adhesive is then hardened using a special light.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM), or ¨Traditional Crowns¨, are still the most common crowns used today because they can be cheaper than pure porcelain crowns.

However, PFM crowns will not last as long and also do not look as natural as pure porcelain crowns.

You may have noticed some people with a black line at the gum level where their teeth meets the gum, well, they have porcelain fused to metal crowns. So for these reasons, pure porcelain crowns are increasingly becoming the crown of choice for patients and dentists.

The crowns we use and recommend are metal free.

Temporary or Provisional crowns are used most often following an implant procedure. Time is needed for the implant to fuse to the bone, normally approximately 4 months. During this time a temporary or provisional crown is used as they are designed not to take the full bite or chewing forces, thereby protecting the implant during the healing process.

Inlays and Onlays are similar to crowns but they are used when a large filling is needed (i.e. when more than two of the sidewalls of a tooth are missing). If a quality material such as pure porcelain or E-Max is used, an inlay or onlay can strengthen the structure of the tooth. Inlays are placed within the grooves of a tooth, whereas onlays are placed within the grooves and cover the edges. As with crowns, they have to be strong enough to support the forces of biting and chewing. We use inlays and onlays made of pure porcelain or E-Max due to the strength and appearance of these materials and we make them to match a tooth’s color.

We use CAD/CAM dental technology to make all our crowns.

This technology helps us to make crowns quickly and to achieve precise natural looking results every time.

We take a digital scan of the area where the crown is to be placed and we use computer software to design the crown.

The resulting design is sent to a milling machine and the crown is cut from a block or disc.

It is then placed in an oven to harden. The whole process can take as little as one hour.

As with your original teeth, you need to have a good oral hygiene routine, i.e. brushing and flossing at least twice a day with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.

The dental crowns we use, made of Zirconia porcelain, will not stain or their color fade and we guarantee them for life.

We do recommend that people with bruxism (grinding or clenching of the teeth) use a mouthguard at night to protect their teeth and new crown, inlay or onlay.

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap that is left by one or more missing teeth. A bridge can be made up of two or more dental-crowns on either side of the gap with a false tooth or teeth in between.

The false teeth are normally made of porcelain, or a composite material such as E-MAX. They are an economical way of replacing missing teeth.

We use dental crowns to not only replicate the original tooth in terms of function, but we can design crowns to look like the original tooth or even better.
